Is all this really necessary?

Who knew it would take all this stuff to keep a little baby fed?

And we have expanded the collection since this picture was taken with two more bottles....

And, YES, it is necessary, gets you through the night without having to do dishes.

Hello! If I can ask, is Cindy still breastfeeding? We've had a very difficult time trying to get Lucia to eat off the breast. The lactation consultant we saw said that it's very common for NICU babies to have trouble breastfeeding. Just curious if you have had trouble too.

Hi Heather,

Maya was doing well in the NICU when we tried breast feeding. However, at home we have not been as succesful. I think we are partly to blame since we want to make sure she eats enough to grow and it's hard to judge how much she gets down when she is on the breast...so we cheat and give her the bottle most of the time. I think Maya has gotten lazy too, supply is faster, easier and she is used to the bottle.

We really need to give it a serious try again but it takes two people to get everything lined up properly and I'm back to work so we don't have much time anymore.

So Yes, we are having a difficult time too. Today was not a fun feeding day. She spat up during two feedings and every feeding today was slow and painful. Normally she sucks down 100ml+, but today it has been more like 60-80ml per feeding.

Aha. Thanks for the answer. It's hard for sure. I'm pumping breastmilk 6 times a day, in addition to feeding her, so that's where my time is spent all day. Pete works from home (thankfully), so I'm lucky to have him to rely on if I need 5 minutes alone.

Re: eating enough: we've had the opposite problem -- she's a bottomless pit. She ate 25 oz of food today -- a new record. And she refuses to go to sleep right now -- Pete and I trying to keep sane, but it's hard.

We'll have to get together to commiserate soon!

Maya set a new record yesterday with 24oz and her real birthday isn't until today 10/28 so she is eating like a champ normally. Not sure what the heck happened today...gas?

Yes, we have to get together soon. It's nice to be able to share the battle stories and know that you are not alone in the endless worry about feedings, poop, rashes, funny sounds, breathing sounds etc etc.
